| This paper analyzes On Five Ranks of Dukes by Lu Ji with the historical method and finds that Lu Ji's feudal thoughts consisted of the three components: "Dukedom with other surnames", "Fiefdom"and “Heredity”. Lu Ji believed that the feudal system performed three functions: enfeoffing dukes, balancing power and removing social malpractice. Lu Ji's feudal thoughts were influenced by the restored idea of power balance in the feudal public opinions and political arguments in the Western Jin Dynasty. The combination of the system of five ranks of dukes and the system of enfeoffment was to upgrade the threshold value of “dukedom with other surnames”. |
