| The Mandarin Duck and Butterfly School novels are the outcome out of both inheritance of the traditional Chinese novel legacy and to a certain extent of inspiration by the Western romance novels. In the Mandarin Duck novels, free love is advocated, and adultery is opposed, and the marriage conception based on free love and parent decision is in agreement with that in the Chinese traditional novels, and the literary conception of games and entertainment is also the return of Chinese traditional novels. The Butterfly School novels are characterized by tragic ending，focuses on short stories creation, innovation of narration, and attention to psychological and setting descriptions, which are out of the inspiration of the Western romance novels. |
