      “蔷薇”在”五四”时期周作人的语典里很可玩味,寓示了抵抗丑恶现实的知识阶级理想。周作人的“蔷薇”意象最初来源于匈牙利作家育珂摩尔的小说《黄蔷薇》。古希腊第十文艺女神萨福的情诗是又一个重要的蔷薇意象源。周作人与羽太信子间的关系堪称“蔷薇”。周作人蔷薇的基点是爱。爱的福音观传播久远,深入人心。若一探其源头,则周作人的“蔷薇”意象是难以回避和抛开的。周作人曾称文艺为蔷薇的事业,但随着蔷薇光环的褪去,文艺消却了光芒,文学店宣布关门。1923年后的周作人绝少提及蔷薇,理想时代逐渐远去。

      "Rose" was very noteworthy in Zhou Zuoren's language during the "May 4th" Movement, implying the ideals of the intellectuals who resisted the ugly reality. Zhou Zuoren's image of "rose" originated from Yukomo's novel Yellow Rose in Hungary. The love poems of Sappho, the tenth goddess of literature and art in ancient Greece, were another important source of rose images. The relationship between Zhou Zuoren and Yutai Xinzi can be called "Rose". The rosette-like relationship with his wife can not be attributed to Zhou Zuoren's broad thinking and cognitive mentality. Zhou Zuoren had always used "Rose" in the sense of love, and Yutai Xinzi may be a "Rose" fable in a certain sense. Zhou Zuoren's rose was based on love. The gospel of love had been spreading for a long time and had been deeply rooted in people's hearts. If we explore its source, Zhou Zuoren's image of "rose" is unavoidable and thrown away. Zhou Zuoren once called “literature and art” as a career of roses, but with the fading of the halo of roses, literature and art disappeared, and literature store was declared closed. After 1923, Zhou Zuoren rarely mentioned roses and the ideal era was gradually fading away.
